FreedomとLiberty

ジーニアス和英辞典で「自由」を引いてみると次のように記されています。

freedom （享受している）自由（の状態）、束縛や制限のないこと

liberty (まだ享受していない)（束縛・圧制などからの）自由
ある場所の使用（出入り）の自由

「自由」を表わす一般的な語はfreedomで、しばしばlibertyもfreedomと同義に用いられる。
ただし、libertyは支配者・政府の圧制・抑圧から抜け出して自由になることを意味するためにより積極的なニュアンスがあり、また「まだ享有していない自由」をいう場合が多い。
これに対してfreedomは単に言動について束縛や制限のないことを意味し、特別に束縛や圧政の存在を前提としない。

今度はロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典を引いてみる。

freedom
